The day started fairly sunny and we snapped this pic in our hotel parking lot.
We rode for a while and it became less sunny, so our pictures don't do the landscape justice. During this particular stretch we saw more mountains, waterfalls, clouds, castles and.... horse poop.
We felt pretty darn confident about navigating the bike path system at this point. The only thing that could mess us up now would be if a path was closed...
Let's just say, this was impassible. We're not sure what they were doing, but a lot of men were standing around watching. Big excitement in a medium sized Swiss town. However, we put on our thinking caps, looked at the map, and found an alternative route. It was precipitous, because our alt route took us by the grocery store!
On our way out of town, we ran across yet another small farm close to the path. The cows took much greater interested in us than usual.
Our route instructions said we'd go back to the Rhein, but what we found was very different from the part of the Rhein we'd seen before. Cut between two mountain ranges, the Rhein was wider, more shallow, and the bike paths were high on each side. We found an interesting set of WWII bunkers, with a convenient bench to sit and have our lunch.
(Bread, salami and the thinnest of pickles. Jimmy John would be ashamed, but it hit the spot)
Dessert was great too. If you are what you eat, then "Ich bin ein Berliner."
We rode further along the Rhein and marveled in the beauty. Eventually our path took us across the river as well as across the border.
(Close examination of the poop determined that while it was found in Liechtenstein, it was a product of Switzerland).
Then we started on the route in Liechtenstein. We thought the country would primarly be the capital, Vaduz, yet it was bunch of little towns before and after. It seemed to take take forever, anticipating a view of the castle.
Soon enough we found ourselves at the Austrian border. Here is Bob sneaking across...
For the latter part of the trip through Liechtenstein, and into Austria, it rained steadily. Sadly, we have no other pictures. But you get the idea.
We found Feldkirch and it was so charming. Bigger than many of the towns we've seen, but had an "old city" area where our hotel was located. We enjoyed this lovely view of the town and then had the BEST dinner of our trip so far.
Tomorrow will be an exciting day including hillier countryside, a cogwheel train ride, and a visit to a special site. Stay tuned!
I will have dish #2. That looks delicious!
